How to care for and store your scarves so they last longer

  • 7 November 2023

We are going to give you some tips and tricks for maintaining and storing your scarves and wraps for a very long time.

As far as maintenance, we can classify scarves into 3 categories according to the main material of their composition:

First category

The first group is made up of cotton-based scarves. To care for these scarves, hand washing is recommended in water at 30/40°C. Cotton is not a delicate material, so you can also choose to put them in the washing machine on a gentle setting and without too much detergent, which can harm the colors. Give it a good steam iron for a nice finish. If you want more details, look at our blog: HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR COTTON SCARF

Second category

This group consists of scarves that are mostly wool or cashmere. These scarves are more delicate and require some special care. If you are afraid of damaging your wool scarf, you should simply take the scarf in for dry cleaning. However, you can hand wash your scarf in lukewarm water to avoid felting. La Fabrique d’écharpe strongly advises against machine washing. Please note, under no circumstances should you put wool in the dryer, as wool cannot withstand temperature differences. A little steam will make it soft and fluffy again. Please refer to our blog, HOW TO WASH YOUR WOOL SCARF?

Third category

This category pertains to majority silk scarves. Dry cleaning is a good solution if you don’t want to take any risks. But you can wash your silk scarf by hand in cold water. Leave it to soak for a few moments and let it dry without twisting it. Using your steam iron, gently smooth your scarf out. We invite you to refer to our blog: HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR SILK SCARF?

How to store your scarves so they last longer

La Fabrique d’écharpe gives you some advice to keep your scarves looking new for as long as possible!

For day to day storage

You can use a simple hanger to hang your scarves one by one. A hanger is actually the simplest, most practical, and most economical solution. Also, there are tie hangers on the market on which you can hang scarves. To store large items, a skirt hanger is very practical with its two clips. You fold your large stole in half and hang it carefully. Place the hangers in the closet next to your coats and other accessories. In winter, you can add some mothballs to your closet. For those sensitive to odors, there are odorless ones now available on the market.

A second solution is to pass curtain rings through a hanger and slip each scarf into a ring. This way is very practical because you can see all of your scarves at a glance. Be careful not to leave the scarves in the rings for too long as there is a chance that they will wrinkle.

Avoid leaving your scarf balled up at the bottom of the couch or on a coat rack stuck under a pile of clothes. It will be difficult for you to iron it well afterwards!

Storing in between seasons

If you want to store your scarves when you have not worn them for several weeks or months, take a few precautions:

First of all, your scarves must be very clean, even if you have worn them only once, you must wash them or degrease them before storing them. The best solution is to fold them gently and place them in a box (shoe box style). You can put a small white tissue paper between each scarf to prevent them from touching. Close the box tightly to avoid dust. It is best not to put them in plastic to avoid mold. All scarves made from natural materials are susceptible to moths, so slip a few mothballs into the storage box, especially during the summer season.

Of course, there are also special storage units. If you have a lot of scarves, use a small, space-saving multi-shelf unit.
