Men’s scarves are essential accessories for your comfort. In addition, they allow you to express your style while adding a carefully refined touch to your outfits. By choosing their style and material wisely, you can create elegant looks suitable for all seasons and climates.

Men’s scarves to protect from the cold

When it comes to choosing a scarf, you have to ask yourself the main question: When will you wear it? For winter, to protect yourself from the cold, a wool-based scarf is ideal. Wool is a natural material that provides excellent thermal insulation, making it an ideal choice for cold seasons. Wool also has the ability to regulate body humidity, thus ensuring comfort and well-being throughout the day.

Properties of Merino wool

The Merino wool used by French scarf scarves comes from a specific breed of sheep, the Merino, the largest herd of which is found in Australia. French scarf uses certified mulesing-free wool, meaning, without animal abuse. Merino wool is very soft and supple, and keeps you warm without making you sweat. It does not retain odors, is antibacterial, dries very quickly, and is particularly elastic and durable. It is finer than traditional sheep’s wool and it does not itch.

All these properties make scarves made from Merino wool warm and comfortable. Perfect for winter, but Merino wool remains an expensive material and especially in dyed yarn (around €50-60/kg). For fall, choose a blend with only 20 to 30% wool, which will be cozy but a little less warm than scarves with more than 50% wool. French scarf offers the Philadelphia model made mostly of wool. The Cromagnon model is less warm, at only 30% merino wool.

You will also find scarves made with fibers from rarer natural materials such as cashmere, alpaca, and mohair. These fibers are renowned for their great softness and exceptional warmth. It should be noted that these materials are more expensive and may require special maintenance in order to preserve their characteristics.

Where does cashmere come from?

Cashmere is the luxury material par excellence, a noble material which comes from the cashmere goats of the Himalayan highlands of Kashmir, a region straddling Pakistan, Ladakh, and Tibet. A goat produces around 150 grams of cashmere per year, while, for example, you need around 200g to make a scarf. These goats have the particularity of having fur that is three times more insulating than sheep’s wool. In addition, their fiber is much softer, finer, and lighter. However, these goats are rare, production being much lower than demand. This explains why cashmere is much more expensive than regular wool, around 3 to 4 times more expensive, its price being around 150-200€/kg.

This delicate fiber is quite difficult to dye, a lot of precautions are required so that it retains all its soft qualities while maintaining good strength for weaving, and thus few companies dye cashmere yarn. However, La Fabrique d’écharpe has an exceptional partner in this area. French scarf has created fabrics cleverly mixing silk, cashmere, and cotton to achieve an ultra soft, ultra fine, ultra warm fabric! The Thales or Manchester models are good examples of this!

To summarize, choose a scarf made from natural animal materials for their thermal properties and their soft and fluffy feel to protect yourself from the cold.

Men’s scarves for summer

For summer, we need freshness and lightness. Cotton, a natural material of plant origin, is perfect for use in men’s scarves this summer. Cotton is also interesting planet-friendly option, especially organic cotton, as it has a reduced environmental impact thanks to its planet-friendly production method.

Properties of Cotton

Cotton is the par excellence natural material, being easy to wear and inexpensive (between 15 and 25€/kg for dyed yarn). It is very good for summer scarves because the main property of cotton is being very absorbent. Its plant fiber can in fact absorb up to 8.5% of its weight in water. Cotton is also a very good insulator, and can insulate well from both heat and cold. Cotton is a plant fiber that is fairly easy to dye. We have a multitude of colors from the most pastel to the most vibrant.

La Fabrique d’écharpe buys Giza cotton from Egypt, since this is the best long-fiber cotton, and thus is a very high quality cotton used by luxury brands around the world. We prefer a scarf with more than 50% cotton for the summer, such as our Losange or Desert models. Today, cotton can also be used in winter scarves, for example when blended with wool or silk.

Silk for all seasons

For over 3,000 years, silk has acquired international renown thanks to its numerous special properties. Silk scarves are often used as elegant accessories for special events or to add a sophisticated touch to everyday outfits. Silk can also be blended with all other natural materials, for intimate blends, with an incomparable feel to the touch.

What else can we say about silk?

Silk is a natural fiber of animal origin, coming from the cocoon produced by the Bombyx caterpillar. For centuries, silk has been considered a luxurious material. The price of silk in dyed yarn varies between 70-100€/kg. Silk has countless qualities. It is very light and offers a rare softness to the touch. It keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer. With a shiny and luminous appearance, it is fluid, absorbs humidity, and is very durable. All of these are reasons why it is a favored material for scarves, pure or mixed! French scarf has created a multitude of quality silk-based products. A loom dedicated to silk remains at the service of creation and production in the workshop all year round. For men, choose compositions mixed with silk for mid-season, such as wool/silk for fall or cotton/silk for spring. We have pieces that are an original blend of silk and wool like Kyoto and silk and cotton like Chicago.

There are also men’s scarves made from synthetic fibers. But these materials, like polyester, polyamide or acrylic, although durable, do not have all the qualities of the prized natural materials listed above!

The importance of a scarf’s dimensions

Also remember that size, shape, and thickness are important aspects of your scarf’s comfort level. A large, thin scarf is very comfortable to wear and keeps you just as warm as a small, thick scarf. Choose a model that matches your body shape. If you are tall, you can pull off an oversized scarf!

The way you wear your scarf or headscarf can make all the difference. You can wear it wrapped around your neck several times for optimal comfort and warmth. For example, over your jacket for winter sports and mountain walks. Or wear it casually placed just behind your neck for a chic and elegant style.

In summary

Choose natural materials like wool, cashmere, cotton, or silk, which offer both comfort and elegance. These noble fibers are also renowned for their ability to regulate body temperature by retaining heat on cooler days and providing a pleasant feeling of freshness during hot periods.

Depending on each season, you can adapt your choice of materials. Choose light cotton scarves in summer. To face harsh winter weather, choose a beautiful wool scarf. And to add a luxurious touch to your outfits, switch to a wonderful cashmere stole.
