How to wear a scarf for a wedding or formal occasion

  • 27 April 2021

Whether you’re a guest or the bride, scarves and large stoles are often worn on special occasions, whether it’s a wedding, a baptism, a formal evening. Take a look at our advice for creating a beautiful outfit and accessory pairing.

A beautiful scarf or stole is an essential accessory to embellish your wedding outfit, it will play a double role. Firstly, it adds a little extra “something” to your outfit with its sophisticated chic look. Secondly, it will give you a little extra comfort and warmth on cool evenings or if the air conditioning of the event hall is a bit much. We are here to help with your choices.

If you’re the bride

You will have to choose between wearing a veil or a stole, you cannot wear them together. You could, however, wear a veil for the ceremony itself, and then a stole for the toast and reception.

If you have a sleeveless or very low-cut dress, a silk stole would be perfect as it will cover your shoulders during the ceremony, adds movement when you walk, and will be a beautiful accessory for your wedding pictures. If you want to accentuate your hair jewelry, necklace, and earrings, opt for a stole.

Careful! Remember to match your stole with your dress, so if your dress is white, pair it with a white stole, if your dress is ivory, choose an ivory stole.

If your dress is long and voluminous, you will need a large stole, for example our monochrome stoles in 70×200cm in white or ecru silk. Large stoles are also practical because they can be worn in different ways, tied in front in a classic style, over the shoulders like a shawl, closer to the neck to keep warm. On the other hand, if you have a short dress, you should choose a smaller scarf.

If you’re the groom

Your wedding day is a special one that will only happen once in your life. This is a perfect opportunity to get noticed by the guests, not only for the bride, but also for the groom.

You will have to choose between a classic neck tie, a very trendy bow tie, an ascot tie. Don’t hesitate to ask your future wife the color and style of her dress so that your outfit goes well with hers. Give particular attention to small accessories like your pocket square, cufflinks, or buttonholes, because perfecting your look is all about the details. Be careful, choose a comfortable outfit, and enjoy this marathon day with more ease.

If you’re a guest (women)

You are invited to a wedding. The first thing thing to do is consult with the bride and groom to find out the theme of their celebration. Th Your accessories can be an important way to make yourself fit in better with their theme. If your outfit is plain with one or two colors, you have two solutions: either go with a classic chic look and pair your dress with a plain scarf in a neutral color; alternatively you can choose a contrasting color, or make yourself more elegant by pairing your dress with a patterned stole.

If you are taller, wear a larger dimensioned stole, for example the shaded silk stoles in 90x180cm are easy to match, because they show all the nuances from one color to another. On the other hand, if you are shorter, go for a smaller scarf.

Because elegance is often hidden in the details, take great care in choosing your accessories to go to a wedding.

If you’re a guest (men)

If you’re one of the groomsman, often the future spouses will choose your outfit for you, or just certain accessories like your tie, or boutonniere. But if you’re not a groomsman, it’s a perfect occasion to show off a chic, elegant look. A scarf just placed over your suit jacket without a knot will give you a very refined look. The season determines the material

The material of your scarf will depend a lot on the season of your event. Summer is the favorite season for weddings, so there you  will want a silk scarf, with chiffon being the ideal material.

In winter, a fur stole or equivalent material will be more suitable. For the intermediate seasons like spring or fall, the choice is yours, but often blends are nice, like wool/silk, cashmere/silk, or in silk satin.
