Pairing a Scarf with a Suit: Tips and Outfit Ideas

  • 17 February 2025

Why wear a scarf with a suit?

Since a suit is usually monochrome, accessories like scarves can drastically change the overall look. Therefore, it’s essential to know how to pair your scarf with your suit.

Choosing a Scarf for Your Suit:

The key factors in selecting the right scarf are material, size, color, and pattern.

Materials: Opt for natural materials like silk. La Fabrique d’Écharpe recommends the Vincent blue scarf in 100% silk, worn like a tie. Silk and wool blends or silk and cotton blends are also ideal for pairing with a suit. If your budget allows, cashmere or a cashmere blend is the ultimate choice. Cashmere is a luxurious material that adds chic, elegance, and sophistication to your look and will complement your suit jacket beautifully.

Size: Choose long scarves that are not too wide, to wear as simply as possible by draping them behind your neck with both ends at the front, or folding them in half and passing both ends through the loop. You can tuck the ends inside your suit jacket.

Color: Make sure to match your scarf’s color with your suit. If you’re wearing a suit in neutral colors like black, gray, or navy, you’ll have no trouble finding the right scarf, as nearly all colors will work. However, if your suit is royal blue, bottle green, or brick, choose a scarf in a neutral color. For example, with royal blue, go for navy or black; with bottle green, choose black or gray; and with a brick red suit, a natural beige scarf will be perfect.

Patterns: Opt for geometric or abstract patterns for a relaxed look. We offer the Ride scarf with sophisticated geometric patterns, which pairs perfectly with an anthracite suit. If you want to emphasize a chic and classic style, go for a solid scarf or one with just a woven texture effect. Our Tout Doux cashmere scarf is ideal for pairing with a suit.

Outfit Ideas for Pairing a Scarf with a Suit

Formal Outfit: For ceremonies, business lunches, or formal nights out, you’ll love wearing a silk scarf with a classic black, anthracite, or dark navy suit. We recommend the Vincent red scarf, made of 100% silk with a refined cashmere semi-pattern.

Business Casual Outfit: A wool or wool and silk scarf will create a great effect. To add a chic touch, choose a cashmere scarf like the Manchester taupe scarf.

Casual Outfit: You can achieve a relaxed look with a suit by adding some accessories, especially if you choose a cotton or cotton-wool blend scarf, like the Titane cotton cheiche scarf from La Fabrique d’Écharpe.

How to Wear a Scarf Around the Neck

There are many ways to wear a scarf. Here are six great ways to tie your scarf:

The Simple Knot:

This is the simplest way to tie a scarf. You wrap the scarf around your neck, making sure one end is longer than the other. Then, tie the two ends in front so that they are roughly the same length. You can adjust the knot’s tightness depending on your needs and preferences.

The Simple Loop:

Another very simple technique, the simple loop involves wrapping the scarf once around your neck, keeping both ends in front. Check that both ends are the same length. This style is very comfortable for winter when you want to keep your neck well protected from the cold.

The Simple Knotted Loop:

This is a variation on the simple loop. You create a simple loop and tie the two ends in front. A perfect way to wear a scarf in cold weather and winter sports, where the scarf stays securely around your neck thanks to the knot.

The Parisian Knot:

This is certainly the most popular technique for men. The knot is simple and quick to tie. You start by folding the scarf in half, base to base. Once its around your neck, you pass the two ends through the loop you’ve created, then pull on both ends to tighten the knot. This knot is very stable, fully adjustable, and very easy to tie and untie.

The Pretzel Knot:

This is a variation on the Parisian knot. The base is the same: you fold the scarf in half, wrap it around your neck with the loop on one side and the two ends on the other. Instead of passing both ends through the loop, you slide just one end and twist the loop halfway to slide the second end through. You’ll end up with a very original knot with volume that won’t slide around, adding a chic and sophisticated touch to your look. Thanks to its good hold, this is a great knot for men and will look great on a suit jacket.

The Simple Tucked Loop:

An original variation of the simple loop. Once you’ve wrapped the scarf around your neck, you pass both ends inside the loop near your neck. This slightly complicated knot creates the effect of a faux knot that’s quite wide. It’s perfect for men to accessorize a casual-chic look.

Let your imagination run wild to create knots, folds, and ties however you wish. You can even simply drape the scarf behind your neck with both ends floating in front for a stylish and casual look!

Wearing a Scarf in Mid-Season

Today, a scarf can be adapted to an y seasons. It is an essential fashion accessory for both women and men. For mid-season, opt for lighter, cooler scarves. Choose materials like cotton, linen, or silk. These natural fibers have thermoregulating properties, offering comfort during the transitional weather and even in the summer. These breathable fibers retain heat when it’s cold and provide coolness when it’s hot—an undeniable advantage for adapting to changing weather. The way you tie your scarf around your neck also plays a role. Wrap it multiple times around your neck for colder days, and when it’s milder, just tie a loose Parisian knot.

Matching Your Scarf with Shoes and Other Accessories

For a more polished look, make sure your shoes and other accessories complement your suit and scarf.

For a classic, elegant look with a suit – shirt – solid silk scarf, we recommend classic leather shoes like Oxfords. If you’re wearing a black suit, avoid chocolate brown shoes, and opt for lighter-colored shoes or, for a safe bet, go with black shoes. For example, with a tuxedo, choose a white silk scarf and black patent leather shoes—the epitome of James Bond elegance.

For a more casual look, with a suit – t-shirt – wool/silk scarf with small patterns, your options expand. Loafers, leather, or suede boots are a great alternative to assert a chic and modern style.

To add a casual touch to your suit look, pair it with white sneakers—an idea that was once unthinkable but has now become mainstream. Perfect for a chic and trendy office look.

A Little Tip: Match your belt with your shoes.

Other accessories can complete your outfit, such as hats and gloves. Hats are making a comeback, and it’s important to match them with your scarf and the rest of your outfit. You have many options: Panama hats for the summer, felt hats for winter, berets, and classic old-fashioned hats.

Scarf and Suit Care:

First, check the composition of your scarf. If it contains an animal fiber such as wool or cashmere, opt for dry cleaning the first time around. Later, you can delicately wash it by hand with lukewarm water using an appropriate detergent or gentle baby shampoo. Never put it in the dryer; instead, let it air dry flat and avoid direct sunlight. Iron with a steam iron on a low setting. If your scarf is 100% cotton, you can machine wash it on a gentle cycle at 30°C, but do not use the dryer. Finally, you can steam iron it. If your scarf is silk and you don’t want to risk it, take it to the dry cleaner. Otherwise, silk can be hand-washed in cold water, let it soak without twisting the fabric, dry it flat (do not use a dryer!), and steam iron it.

For your suit, after checking the care labels, in most cases, take it to the dry cleaners to preserve its quality.

To keep your scarves and suits in good condition for a long time, avoid cleaning them too often. Generally, your scarf and suit will be made from natural materials. Thanks to their exceptional properties, natural fiber garments do not require frequent washing. Simply air out the garment and wash it only when there is visible dirt.

If you’re not wearing your scarf or suit for a few months (like during the summer), make sure to clean them properly before storing them, preferably in a cover or pouch away from light, and store them in a dry place. Quality garments and accessories made from natural fibers retain their exceptional properties and rarely wear out.
