To start with, silk is a prized, sought-after natural material with multiple properties that make it perfect for scarves. Next, its silk threads weave together very easily, and also hold dyes well. Additionally, several different printing techniques can be used with silk. Thus, thanks to its natural properties, a wide variety of silk scarves can be made.

Powdered rose muslin silk

The history of silk

Did you know that during the Renaissance period, silk was woven in Italy, especially in Florence and Venice? Soon after the silk industry got off to a good start in Italy, a Frenchman named François Premier brought the silk industry to France and granted a monopoly on making silk in France to our own city of Lyon. This is why in France, Lyon is known as the capital of silk.

As you probably already know, Chinese silk remained an infinitely precious and jealously guarded secret for nearly three millennia. This monopoly on silk production enabled China to trade with the rest of the world, via the famous “silk road” which crossed deserts and mountains to link Asia to Europe. The Silk Road was in use from the 2nd century onwards by caravans bringing back various riches to Europe, the most prized of which was silk. In the 6th century, two monks who had been sent by Emperor Justinian hid silkworm eggs in their walking sticks and thus brought silk making to the Byzantine Empire. The secret of silk manufacturing was thus revealed, and so began the manufacture of silk fabrics in Greece, then Italy, and later in France.

Legend has it that in the year 2700 BC, when a Chinese princess was drinking her tea in the shade of a white mulberry tree, a silkworm cocoon fell into her cup. As he took it out of the cup, the thread began to unravel on her fingers.

The properties of silk

Silk is a natural fiber of animal origin, derived from the cocoon made by the mulberry moth caterpillar. Silk is truly an amazing material! Do you know how many meters of thread there are in one single cocoon? Normally between 700 and 1200 meters, without any breaks! This thread is made up of two very fine filaments of a protein called fibroin. Another substance called sericin, also a kind of protein, holds the two strands together. This raw yarn is called raw silk. The sericin is removed during the scouring process to produce a supple, soft yarn. Due to its natural origin, wearing silk and particularly a silk scarf has many advantages.

Property 1: Softness

Silk is soft, light, and fluid. The compositions of wool/silk or even better cashmere/silk are fabulous blends, which are also widely used in Haute-Couture.

Three ways of making silk cloth

There are three widely used processes in silk production: silk dyeing, silk printing ,and Jacquard weaving.

Dyeing is the action of infusing an unbleached silk fabric with a coloring agent. Muslin silks and satin silks are often used for dying, resulting in wonderfully subtle colors.

Silk printing is the action of applying multiple dyes in the form of a pattern, with there being several silk printing techniques such as frame printing, rotary printing, and digital printing, among others.

Shaped weaving, which today is called Jacquard weaving, creates patterns by the perpendicular interlacing of weft and warp threads. The design is thus created in the weave itself. This technique is most often used with colored threads, to obtain colored depth effects and patterns. Joseph Marie Jacquard, an heir to the Lyon weaving tradition, gave his name to this technique by inventing an innovative programming mechanism that simplifies production.

Jacquard silk scarf

Printed silk scarf

Dyed silk scarf

The drawbacks of silk

Silk does not do well with chemicals, including perspiration, perfumes, deodorants, and certain detergents. Because of this, certain precautions must be made when cleaning it. Silk is also sensitive to repetitive motions like stirring, and thus you should not put it in a washing machine. Rubbing and creasing can cause irreparable damage to silk fabrics. Instead, you should wash silk gently by hand with Marseille soap at a low temperature.

Another drawback to silk is its price, which is due to the fact that producing it is a long and laborious process. It involves a large number of different steps, which justifies the price. A few important steps include: The silkworms must be bred and mulberry trees cared for, a process known as sericulture. Then the yarn must be removed from the cocoons, then spun, scoured, weaved, and dyed or printed. It’s a lot of work!

Printes silk scarf

Silk scarves: A luxury fashion accessory

Since ancient China, silk has had a reputation as a luxurious material thanks to its incomparably soft feel to the touch and its satiny appearance.
